2016 Broderick Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

The Wine Front - Mike Bennie

Broderick Vineyard suggests that this wine is produced from fruit off the long-established Basket Range Wines vineyard of the Broderick family – self evident stuff really. Great to see this wonderful family getting their name out there under a number of guises, including their own diversifying range of wines, with sons Sholto and Louis accelerating things. Anyway, Cooke Brothers is a new(ish) outfit with two releases out there in wine land, this (cabernet with a splash of petit verdot) and a chardonnay from another vineyard. The winemaking here is hands-off in nature, sees 25% new oak.

Sleek, sultry, satisfying red of just enough heft but plenty of freshness. A mesh of black berries, currants, black olive, pepper and that sweet herby thing that happens when you crush lemon myrtle leaves in your hands. The smooth ride across the palate is moreish, the supple chew that builds to the long, lazy finish speaks of potential to mature well, and if not, then good structure for now. Oak seasoning just so. An effortless feel here. Lovely.

2017 Schoenthal Vineyard Chardonnay

The Wine Front - Mike Bennie

I am not sure from which vineyard in the parish of Schoenthal, Adelaide Hills the grapes come from, but that’s the name of the wine. No doubt from a beautiful part of that beautiful valley… new outfit here, with Ben Cooke the only one of the Cooke Brothers I have small detail on. Cooke Brothers brings to mind the Isley Brothers, who I immediately put on the stereo just now. You should too.

Pretty perfume, green apple, fresh stone fruit, whiff of nougat/yeasty notes, charming in its subtle nature and yet complexity. Cool and even in the palate, refreshing acidity, well meshed more delicate style with fine minerally complexity. Mouthwatering and refreshing. Done well here.
